Hey guys...
Current mood: creative
Hey guys. Sorry for the delay in updates. It's been difficult finding the time to get a new Vlog put together, so I thought I'd write a quick blog instead. :)
We just wrapped another successful show in Pittsburgh, PA. The crowds have been great. Very responsive. VERY loud. I love it.
We're neck deep in this record. Mr. Rob Cavallo is pushing all the right buttons and turning all the right knobs to make this record great. Just as importantly, I'm proud to announce the first addition to my band, Mr. Neal Tiemann (hereafter referred to as "Doctor"). Doctor was the chief songwriter/lead guitarist in MWK, the band I played with in Tulsa. He's one of my closest friends and I am absolutely stoked to have him on board.
We're putting the finishing touches on my brand new website. It will have a very cool facebook/myspace vibe to it, where you can put together your own space and interact with other fans. I think it could be a really cool way to interact with each other.
I want to address the CDs from my old band, Axium. Quite a few fans have brought these records to the shows, looking for signatures. While I am happy to oblige and am very grateful that so many have taken an interest in something I put my heart into for the bulk of my musical life, I am sad to hear both that the pricing of these records has been set at astronomical amounts purely for the sake of taking advantage of you guys who just want the music, and that the release and sale of these records was done without the consent of the chief songwriters involved in making those records. I can assure you that I play no part in the sale or distribution of these records, and neither condone nor back the people that are. Hell, we would've given you the music but a few years ago. Funny how things and people change...
Be sure to keep an ear to the ground, as we have to singles coming out from some of our friends. Mr. David Archuleta has a single coming out soon, and Ms. Kristy Lee has one coming soon too. So be sure to check those out and support them as well as you've done for me. Let's prove to everyone else that this was and continues to be the most talented season of AI yet.
Take care and see you on the road,
~D
An update! FINALLY! And I'll take it!
Honestly, I'm not gonna front, I DL'd all of my Axium music. I'm not going to support someone who is blatantly ripping off fans.
That's all!
Oh Mavid.
Here is the Idol Top 9 (WTH is Chikizie- hope everything is okay bb!) performing "Please Don't Stop the Music" at their tour stop on 07/30/08.
Watch "Mavid" do their thang!
I'm pretty sure every fangirl in Idol land had the same reaction I did, infact, I'm still trying to get my jaw off the ground!
Haha!
What will those silly boys come up with next?

Even More Blake Lewis from X-Fest!
Here's Blake with Johnny Nails performing, "Gots to Get Her" last weekend at X-Fest in Modesto, CA!
The fact that they pulled this song off with just Blake and Johnny just really attests to their talent.
I thought the song went over very well!
And as a member of the audience, I was pretty stoked! "Gots to Get Her" is one of my favorite songs off of "Audio DayDream".

To Have Heroes Interview with Music Equals Life

From Musicequalslife.com:
Interview with Andy Skib of To Have Heroes and MWK
I've knowN Andy Skib, lead singer of MWK and brain child behind the newer project - To Have Heroes, for 5-6 years. I'm pretty sure that he was still in high school at the time that I originally met him. But that doesn't mean that I didn't recognize the talent in young man that I saw fronting a band comprised of his elders and friends. Andy took the time to respond to some questions regarding both MWK and To Have Heroes.
Andy Skib - "To Have Heroes" and "MWK"
Nags: First of all, I want to touch quickly on MWK. You guys just released the EP Luna Despierta and am curious as to where MWK is going in the near future? Or even the distant future?
Andy: As of now, I don't think any of us are really clear on where MWK might fit in to our lives. I know Neal, Dave and myself like the idea of doing something MWK related at some point in the distant future.
Nags: I believe that Luna Despierta roughly translates to "wide-awake moon", how did you come up with that name?
Andy: Neal actually came to me with the name meaning, "the moon awakes". I agreed that it sounded interesting and in someway related to us doing this EP without any outside direction.
Nags: I just have to mention Incoherent With Desire to Move On... It's such an amazing album. Will any of these songs be reappearing on a full length in the near future?
Andy: I am sorry to say that I don't have an answer for that. I think that if we ever did another full length record we would want to start fresh. "Creating" is one of the greatest things about being a musician and that's what I think we would want to do, create music that shows where we are in our lives.
Andy playing at Plan B
Nags: Okay - You've also just released a somewhat solo project called "To Have Heroes." How did this come about?
Andy: This project "spawned" from me sitting in Tulsa realizing what was going on around me. The music world that I had known was drastically changing, all of my friends were either moving or getting real jobs or becoming TV stars.
Around February 2008, I went into Zac Maloy's studio in Tulsa and played him a song I had written called "Reasons". At that point I was preparing to move to Nashville and star over. On a visit there, shortly after this meeting, Zac called me and we began recording an EP. So here I am now, in Los Angeles doing this interview with Nags!
Nags: What are the other guys from MWK (Josh Center and Neal Tiemann) doing while you're working on the THH project?
Andy: Josh is living in Austin at the moment playing with various bands and working at Yellow Dog Studios.
Neal Is now out here in LA working on David's record. In his spare time he's started a Lounge Act called "The Boston Swingers". He performs in various lounges in the LA area.
Nags: On the song, The Story of Your Life, which is freaking incredible. I've noticed that the co-writing credits go to Ike Hanson, Jason Mraz, and Zac Malloy. How did that writing combination come about?
Andy: That song came from a Hanson writing "camp" you could call it.
Nags: You've spent much of the last month or two living out in LA to play some shows and do some writing. How'd that come about and how'd that go for you?
Andy: The move came about by a high school friend of mine asking me to move to LA with him. It is really as simple as that. I knew that it would be a good place for me to meet some important folks and get my name out there. So far it has shown to be the right move for me. I love Tulsa though. I'm at a place in my life where I can be anywhere I want to be. I have nothing holding me down anywhere. It's a nice place to be but Tulsa will always be "home for me.
Nags: Will you be putting out a full length record at any point in the near future?
Andy: I hope to. I'm trying to use the EP as a tool to get more people involved with the project.
Nags: You've been getting some support from a group of people. They've started calling themselves "Word Heroes." How did that all come about?
Andy: They created the whole thing! The name derives from Dave's fanbase, the WordNerds, and my project, To Have Heroes. It's amazing how things can change when simply more people know about your music.
Nags: What have you been listening to lately?
Andy: The new Jason Mraz album, "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things", is a great record. It's very different from his previous releases.
George Stanford - "Big Drop"
Augustana - "Cant Love Can't Hurt"
I just found this band called The Damnwells. They're from Brooklyn, NY. I found them through a movie called "Chaos Theory", which is a great movie by the way. Most of the music in the movie is from the band and singer, Alex Dezen. Good stuff.
Nags: Continuing in the tradition of Music Equals Life, we've started asking the question, "If you are what you eat, you would be a what?"
Andy: Hotdog
Well, i'd like to thank Andy again for taking time out of his schedule to chat w/ us.

Okay, so Andy Skib is a good friend of David Cook, they used to play in a band called, "Midwest Kings" (or "MWK"), and he also happens to have some AMAZING music!
Check out his myspace page for his latest project, "To Have Heroes".
I recommend that you listen to "Story of Your Life".
It's a great song, I dig it.

USA Today Goes Begind-the-scenes with Idol!

From USATODAY.COM:
'American Idol' top 10 hit the road to stardom
By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY
ROSEMONT, Ill. — It's just past 1 p.m. when a convoy of unmarked luxury tour buses pulls up to Allstate Arena, disgorging 10 American Idol finalists in search of a career.
A big hiss from the coach door. Into the wilting humidity steps Chikezie Eze, who raises a weary eyebrow in greeting. Behind him is Ramiele Malubay, lugging luggage that's almost as tall as she is. "I feel like Santa Claus," she groans.
Michael Johns has a spring in his step, but it's deceiving. "I can't sleep on this thing. I keep thinking it's going to crash," he says.
Brooke White frowns as she looks down at her white pants. Big spot. "Oh, well," she says, sighing, striding toward the arena's backstage entrance. Then she looks back. Big smile. "Welcome to madness."
The Byrds posed the musical question 40 years ago: So you want to be a rock 'n' roll star?
The Idols Live tour tries to grant that wish. The old-fashioned way.
Dues are being paid here, a trial by road trip fire that's soothed by both a paycheck and crowds that typically are 10,000 strong.
The Idols pump out nearly a concert a day for 2½ months. Nights on cramped bus bunks, mornings in anonymous hotel rooms. Noon-to-midnight shifts split between signing autographs, performing and signing more autographs. Sleep, wash, rinse, repeat.
On their rare days off, some rush back to Los Angeles to work on albums. Others hammer away at new songs they hope to record before their 15 minutes of Idol fame are up.
This gig in the flight path of O'Hare International Airport is show No. 13 of 53 identical performances that wrap up Sept. 13 in Tulsa. Surely, camaraderie-mauling strife is bound to creep into this grueling picture. Inevitably, the tabloids will have their headlines ("Michael battles Jason for groupie love!").
Right?
A day and night spent with this group reveals friendships that have only gotten tighter, voices that have grown stronger and aspirations that have flown higher.
These are those high school drama buddies at the end of senior year, kids impossibly high on talent whose only lament is that very soon now they'll all scatter to the winds.
How will Jason Castro play blackjack without his good-luck charm, Kristy Lee Cook? Will Malubay ever kick that Lucky Charms habit without Syesha Mercado's concerned nagging? As for fast friends Johns and Idol champ David Cook, separating these twins is something neither wants to address. And for now, they don't have to.
1:40 p.m.
Mobs of fans greet their arrival in Chicago
Suitcases deposited in their latest dressing rooms, most of the Idols head to the parking lot. Hundreds of fans wait in the summer heat, pressed up against metal barricades.
Cheers explode without favor, as shrill for country girl Cook as for tattooed rocker Carly Smithson.
Incredibly, the Idols move slowly and methodically down a 60-yard line of people, skipping no one in this largely female crowd. It's hard to ignore the love. One woman's T-shirt reads O.C.D. — "Obsessive Carly Disorder." Another's banner salutes Dread Heads, fans of dreadlocked Castro.
"He's unique, genuine and humble," says local fan Sarah Crothers, 27, who through a Castro fan site befriended Kairee Kirkwood, 19, who was lured here all the way from Edmonton, Canada, by a free ticket. "I wouldn't have missed him for the world," says Kirkwood.
A few feet away, a fan hands Johns his iPod to sign, then a phone with a girlfriend on the line. The Australian native obliges on both counts. How can he be so relentlessly accommodating?
"Hey, mate, beats what I was doing this time last year," he says.
A fan shoots Johns a thumbs-up for his Chicago Cubs jacket. "Yeah, my buddy Mark DeRosa's the second baseman. I'm going to sing the national anthem at Wrigley again. Doing that made me more nervous than any Idol performance I ever …"
A thundering 747 cuts Johns off, flying just over the roof of the arena on its way to land. The clouds it slices through look menacing.
2:30 p.m.
Time for a quick bite to eat — and a few quick laughs
"Well, look at that, shepherd's pie," says Smithson, surprised to find a British staple as she loads up her plate at the mess hall. The Idols are traveling with their own chef to help mitigate a range in the quality of concert-hall catering.
She sits down with David Archuleta, who's poking at his soup and sandwich. Dad Jeff sits nearby; he's along because his son is only 17.
Castro ambles in. He looks in need of a nap.
"I can't really sleep at night. I guess that's a problem for a lot of us," he says. "I don't go on until the second half of the show, so I grab an hour or more of sleep then."
His favorite part of the tour was a recent two-day hiatus in St. Louis, where the fairer Cook brought him good luck at the blackjack tables. "She and I have gotten close. She's just great."
In a room next door, some of the Idols are trotted out for local media. But given that it's a Saturday and the arena is far from downtown Chicago, the crowd is thin.
After a quick TV interview, Mercado plops down in a plastic chair and exhales. "This is grueling, but being friends helps get us through it."
She says bonding is intense on the girls' bus (the boys have their own). It's an oasis of "Zen calm," complete with candles and healthy foods. Except for Malubay's boxes of sugary cereal.
"Hey, she eats my cereal, too," Malubay says, pointing at Mercado, whom she calls "my sister."
"I do not!" mock-yells Mercado, looking over at White, who also is digging into a bowl.
"Would you look at that woman," says Mercado. "She is so small, but she's always eating."
White laughs. "It's like we're about to graduate, and I can only hope we'll keep in touch," she says. "I am so much myself with these people."
4:10 p.m.
More meeting, more greeting, more signing
All 10 Idols sit at a long table, a bottle of water and a box of Pop-Tarts — the tour's sponsor — in front of each one. Time to get the pens moving again as part of two meet-and-greets, the first with Pop-Tarts' guests, the second with the fractional jet ownership company, NetJets.
Between autographs, Kristy Lee Cook tugs at a bracelet on Archuleta's left wrist. It reads "Archie." A fan gave it to him.
"The crazy thing is, no one has ever called me that before this show," says Archuleta, who is now called that exclusively to distinguish him from the other David.
Cook ascribes Archuleta's huge appeal to the fact that he's "the perfect gentleman." Albeit one she's trying to toughen up. Trained in martial arts, she's teaching him "how to really punch," she says. "He could use some practice."
She says she's had no time to work out since her Idol adventure began. Instead, keeping her motor running means catching shut-eye when she can. And the occasional artificial boost. "I had a can of Red Bull the other day, my first in three years," she says. "I swear, I'm still wound up from it."
The special autograph session over, Eze and David Cook begin the long underground walk to the stage for soundcheck. Cook is carrying a massive framed certificate, showing that a star has been named after the Idol winner.
"Cool, huh?" Cook says.
Eze fires back, "Of course, that's likely a theoretical star."
Cook laughs. "Yeah," he says, "just like me."
Suddenly, a human horn sounds.
"Beep, beep," Smithson says. "Jump on the Carly Express."
Smithson has commandeered a large electric cart. Malubay hops on, followed by others.
"My father-in-law has these carts at his place in Florida, and I love to drive them," Smithson says. She hits the pedal.
It's difficult to tell if those are squeals of delight.
5:25 p.m.
At rehearsals, humor helps lighten the mood
The group is on stage, rehearsing their final number. Time to ham it up as technicians check sound levels.
Kristy Lee Cook, White and Malubay lie on their sides, lifting one leg to the beat in a mock workout. Johns runs up and down a small center-stage staircase as if he's at the gym. Next, they all start doing stomach crunches, laughter drowned out by the thumping beat.
About 90 minutes left before showtime. The group scatters. Eze disappears with his portable video game, deep into a round of Pokémon. The women start hair and makeup, while Johns parks himself in front of an office whose makeshift sign says, "Chiropractor," a useful fixture on a tour that's seen its share of scrapes and bumps (David Cook's knee, Johns' elbow).
"It's been hard to stay fit," Johns says, lamenting his inability to hit the tennis courts. "But I will say, being a celebrity doesn't suck."
He's referring to the tour's stop in Portland, Ore., home of Nike, which gave him a VIP tour.
Johns brought along David Cook, and the two walked out "with a lot of swag," Johns says, pointing at his sneakers. "Roger Federer's personal line of casual shoes. You can't buy these," says Johns, eyes alight. "I don't know how long I'll be a celebrity. Might as well enjoy."
Cook ambles by. The two communicate in a shorthand usually reserved for siblings, all nudges, winks and quips.
"We have the same sense of humor," Cook says. "But, ultimately, this tour isn't about me or David (Archuleta) or Mike, it's about saying thank you to all these people who voted for us."
Showtime — 7:10 sharp — nears. A few Idols dash back to the commissary for dinner. Fried chicken and king crab legs. Plates are light.
Closer to the stage, White and Smithson harmonize while getting their makeup applied. David Cook and Castro both are on cellphones, Cook pacing incessantly while Castro squats near an equipment dolly. Neither are in a rush because they don't come on until the second half of the show.
Nearby, a man dressed as a Pop-Tart tugs on his cartoon gloves, then poses for a picture with the crew before heading out to clown around with the crowd. Castro does a double take.
7:14 p.m.
It's showtime, and the livin' ain't easy …
Eze kicks things off with a blast of soul, which Malubay stretches into diva-ish R&B. Johns switches into rock mode, predictably crushing with Aerosmith's Dream On, his Idol swan song.
Kristy Lee Cook is a revelation, singing in a pure country voice. Her electric blond hair and sequined body win over the formerly disinterested dads in the audience. During Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA, folks tear up.
Smithson brings back the rock vibe. She's spot-on with Heart's Crazy On You, and the crowd lets her know it. "Wow," she says. "A year ago, we all had regular jobs. Now we're here playing to you. That's crazy."
White softens the mood with her set, typified by her barefoot performance of Let It Be.
Smiling is mom Danielle Achepohl, here with four young girls. "If you have kids who love music, there aren't many shows you can bring them to," she says. "This is clean."
The first half ends with a video nod to the charity effort Idol Gives Back. All those who have performed so far return to the stage for U2's Pride (Inthe Name of Love), which then gives way to a Guitar Hero audience-participation session.
Backstage, Eze is off by himself, video game in hand. He smiles easily, but his voice is hushed.
"I guess I'm a loner generally," he says. "But the audience does give me so much. Excuse me." He disappears off toward the chiropractor's office.
Smithson walks by. "Have you seen the keys to this golf cart? I want to go for another ride," she says. The tour has been "a lot more work" than she expected, between the travel and the incessant autograph sessions, not to mention the concerts. "I'm not sure when Motley Crue gets up, but it's not when we do."
The upside, she says, is being able to sharpen her act without worrying about whether it's Beatles week or what Simon Cowell might say about her outfit. "I feel I'm stronger all the way around, from my personality to my voice," she says.
Kristy Lee Cook nods. "On the road, it's been so satisfying to hear fans say, 'We didn't really like you that much on the show, but we love you now.' "
8:55 p.m.
Archuleta brings the show to a crescendo
On stage, Castro's ukulele is mistakenly left unplugged, but he perseveres. Mercado scores a standing ovation after a blistering version of Beyoncé's Listen.
Then comes the Boy Wonder, recalling Beatlemania. The structural integrity of the arena is in doubt as Archuleta rises from the floor, seated at a piano, to perform Robbie Williams' Angels.
"All we're missing is people on stretchers," says Jeff Archuleta, mouthing every lyric.
After Hello, Idol winner Cook whips out a video camera. "I've been filming every audience on this tour to remind me of this experience, so make some noise," he says. It does.
"We're done!" White says after the Idols' Don't Stop the Music finale.
Not even close.
10:50 p.m.
More fans, and more autographs
Back in T-shirts, jeans and sneakers, the Idols return to their fans. This time, the crowd lines 100 yards of fence, three deep. Nearly two dozen police keep an eye on things, though teen girls tend to pose a threat only to eardrums.
For an hour, 10 singers no one knew a year ago sign shirts and posters and newspaper clippings, collect candies, brownies and kisses, and generally bond with a populace that may stay loyal. Or may move on to Season 8's winners.
But for now, they're theirs.
"I'm tired, sure," Johns says. "But you get energy from these people. Just look at them."
The shrieks erase all thoughts of sleep.
12:05 a.m.
On the road again …
The fans won't leave. But there's a schedule to keep. As the flier distributed to the Idols notes, "Tomorrow is a show day in Columbus, Ohio. O'nite drive: 370 miles/6 hours. Move watches forward an hour."
Rain is in the air. Lightning, too.
Johns heads to the boys' bus. On the way, he wraps Archuleta in a bear hug. The youngest Idol squeals in surprise.
"Come on, mate," Johns says. "Time to go."
Another night, another city.
This is probably one of the best articles to come out of the tour.
Definitely click the link up top, because there are more pictures from that day, plus a really good BTS video!

From The Associated Press:
Estelle Getty of 'Golden Girls' dies at 84
By BOB THOMAS
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.
Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."
"The Golden Girls," featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff's belief that television was ignoring its older viewers.
Three of its stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in "Maude," Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Rue McClanahan in "Mama's Family." The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character.
When she auditioned, Getty was appearing on stage in Hollywood as the carping Jewish mother in Harvey Fierstein's play "Torch Song Trilogy." In her early 60s, she flunked her "Golden Girls" test twice because it was believed she didn't look old enough to play 80.
"I could understand that," she told an interviewer a year after the show debuted. "I walk fast, I move fast, I talk fast."
She came prepared for the third audition, however, wearing dowdy clothes and telling an NBC makeup artist, "To you this is just a job. To me it's my entire career down the toilet unless you make me look 80." The artist did, Getty got the job and won two Emmys.
It culminated a long struggle for success during which Getty worked low-paying office jobs to help support her family while she tried to make it as a stage actress.
"I knew I could be seduced by success in another field, so I'd say, 'Don't promote me, please,'" she recalled.
She also appeared in small parts in a handful of films and TV movies during that time, including "Tootsie," "Deadly Force" and "Victims for Victims: The Theresa Saldana Story."
After her success in "The Golden Girls," other roles came her way. She played Cher's mother in "Mask," Sylvester Stallone's in "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and Barry Manilow's in the TV film "Copacabana." Other credits included "Mannequin" and "Stuart Little" (as the voice of Grandma Estelle).
"The Golden Girls," which ran from 1985 to 1992, was an immediate hit, and Sophia, who began as a minor character, soon evolved into a major one.
Audiences particularly loved the verbal zingers Getty would hurl at the other three. When McClanahan's libidinous character Blanche once complained that her life was an open book, Sophia shot back, "Your life's an open blouse."
Getty had gained a knack for one-liners in her late teens when she did standup comedy at a Catskills hotel. Female comedians were rare in those days, however, and she bombed.
Undeterred, she continued to pursue a career in entertainment, and while her parents were encouraging, her father also insisted that she learn office skills so she would have something to fall back on.
Born Estelle Scher to Polish immigrants in New York, Getty fell in love with theater when she saw a vaudeville show at age 4.
She married New York businessman Arthur Gettleman (the source of her stage name) in 1947, and they had two sons, Carl and Barry. The marriage prevailed despite her long absences on the road and in "The Golden Girls."
Getty was evasive about her height, acknowledging only that she was "under 5 feet and under 100 pounds."
In addition to her son Carl, Getty is survived by son Barry Gettleman, of Miami; a brother, David Scher of London; and a sister, Rosilyn Howard of Las Vegas.
Associated Press Writer Robert Jablon contributed to this report.
SO SAD.
I absolutely loved her on that show.
Remember to stay "Golden".

Respect your Idols.
Okay, so there has been some crazy ish going down with the Idols over the past few days, and I had some words that I would like to share.
So, I know it is exciting to see the Idols live, especially when they come out to sign before and after the shows, I've been there, I know it is.
But, there's a line.
When the Idols are at their hotel, that is their private time, and we, as fans, need to respect that. They are performing, doing press, or recording music almost every night, they deserve the privacy and the right to some well needed rest.
They are coming out almost every time before and after shows to greet fans. They do appreciate us, and the concert that we paid absurd prices for tickets to get to is their thank you to us. The greeting before and after the show, they don't have to do that, BUT THEY DO ANYWAYS.
There is a lot of talk about things that have happened before and after the shows, and as fans, show the Idols some respect. They come out and greet us, because they're awesome people with gracious hearts. Don't be rude to them, ANY OF THEM, be polite, say please and thank you. It's that simple.
I could hardly believe half the things I was reading about fans crossing the line as far as privacy, and if for some reason, you happen to stumble across something that really isn't meant to be shared with the world, then keep it to yourself. Don't exploit it. And on that same note, don't go looking for things that Idols want kept private. Like their families' homes and phone numbers. That's just not right.
Now, this is just coming from me, a fan, who really wishes that every fan gets a chance to meet the Idol they supported during AI.
Now, these are my thoughts about this weekend's happenings, it's my opinion, and it's my blog.
Treat others the way you want to be treated. Because the time the Idols come out and talk to us before the show, that's their free time, and they choose to spend it meeting us. Now, that's cool.
I really hope that the ridiculous antics that have been taking place really just stop.
Don't be the person that takes away this awesome privilege from everyone else.
Stay classy, Cookies!

LiveDaily Interview with David Cook

LiveDaily Interview: David Cook
Published July 10, 2008 12:07 PM4
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski / LiveDaily Contributor
The "American Idol" winner should be a champion for the people--and David Cook [ tickets ] is exactly that. The afternoon before the tour's opening night in Glendale, AZ, Cook walked through the media area acknowledging each reporter. Later that evening, fans sitting side stage got a special treat when Cook stood in the wings watching fellow contestant Brooke White and encouraging ticket holders to cheer her on.
"The goal is just to try to create some energy," said Cook, who tried out for the reality-television talent competition on a whim when he accompanied his brother Andrew to auditions. "I think, watching everybody else's set, I've definitely got my work cut out for me. Everybody's bringing it. It's cool. If I can keep up with everybody else, I'll be just fine."
Cook, who began his five-song set with a rock cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello," spoke with LiveDaily about his forthcoming album, his love of Our Lady Peace and how it felt to win the competition.
I understand you're working on a new album and you had the chance to work with Collective Soul's Ed Roland. How was it?
Aww, man, I am a big fan. Obviously, I did "The World I Know" on the show. He always seems to write just really solid, hooky music. I got more nervous about meeting guys like him than I did anybody else through the show and stuff. The bands I get into, you always worry about, "Are they going to be nice?" Ed was so cool. We're talking about going golfing when we swing through Atlanta on the tour. He's a stand-up guy. I was really, really happy with the way everything turned out. Yeah, cool guy.
Who else have you worked with on the album?
I've written with a few people. I got a chance to write with Raine Maida [lead singer] of Our Lady Peace. That was just crazy. He was so nice. I got to write with Zac Maloy of The Nixons, which was cool. Let's see, who else? I got to write with Jason Wade of Lifehouse. I guess I’m lucky. Everyone I've written with has been so nice and really cool. It's been very fruitful. I'm really excited about where the record's headed.
You did Our Lady Peace's "Innocent" on the show. How did you discover the band? They're biggest in border towns and you're from Missouri.
There was a dude that I went to high school with. He was a year or two older than me. At that point, I was really trying to get into some new music. He said, "Well here. Listen to this record." It was Our Lady Peace's "Clumsy." "You can borrow this, da da da." It took me six months to get it back to him. I just loved the record. Then, once college hit and "Gravity" came out, I re-immersed myself in it. I went back and started listening to "Spiritual Machines" and "Happiness ... is Not a Fish That You Can Catch." The ambient stuff on those records is so solid. You just get lost in it. You see the charitable stuff that Raine does and that solidified it for me. I remember watching very recently his video treatment for "Yellow Brick Road," that song he did on his solo record. It was amazing. He goes out and plays acoustic on the streets all day to try to raise $30,000 to build a school in Africa. It's easy for somebody of his stature to kind of rest on his laurels a little bit. The fact that he is so active--I respect him more than I could ever put into words.
For the tour, are you able to choose which songs you sing?
Yeah, yeah. Mainly I'm doing stuff from the show. I'm going to be doing the single, "Time of My Life." And then I have one song that I didn't do on the show, that I'm very, very excited about. It's high energy. I'm hoping to get the crowd into it a little bit and it means something to me.
Do you think you had an advantage over past contestants because you were allowed to play instruments?
I think it helped, yeah, for me personally. I knew going in I wasn't going to be the strongest singer this season. But I knew I could hold my own in my genre. But the instrumentation helped a lot I think. I don't want to say it was a golden goose for me or anything. At the end of the day, I think it was the perfect storm, just a lot of things falling into place for me.
You looked so shocked when you won "American Idol."
I am. I'm still shocked. It's like, "What?" The best way I can explain that moment was it was just an out-of-body experience. I felt like I was watching it. I try to think about it sometimes. I still haven't really processed it. It still seems so foreign to me. I don't feel like I changed. It's like when you have a birthday. Somebody says, "Do you feel older?" It's like, "No." I don't feel like anything's changed just yet.
Wait until 20,000 people start screaming for you tonight. I thought that was really touching when you brought your brother on stage when you won.
He's the reason I'm here. I feel like I'm here on his ticket. Any opportunity that I accrue to showcase the people who put me where I'm at, I'm all for it. So the fact that I was able to do that, that meant a lot to me.
Did it mean a lot to him?
I think so. When I made it through the first round, we were interviewed by a local news affiliate. They asked my brother how he was feeling. He said, "It's great. I don't have to do any of the work. I can just enjoy the fruits of his labor." I tried to help out where I could. I got the chance to have him come out for his 21st birthday, which was a few weeks ago. Spend a little money on him. Pamper him. It was nice to be able to say I'm in that position in my life where I can do something like that.
David wrote music for his new album with Lifehouse's Jason Wade.
I am so full of ABSOLUTE GLEE!
Who's songs did I say Cookie should cover during Idol?
LIFEHOUSE.
David working with Jason Wade...holy crap, even better!
HOLLA!!!!!!!!!

Idols LIVE! San Jose, CA 07.08.08 Recap!
Here's my personal recap from the San Jose, CA Idols LIVE!
Enjoy!
It was a great show and yay for meeting the Idols again!
Enjoy!
So, SAN JOSE!
That morning, I met up with the lovely ladies of the “Bay Area Word Nerds”! A huge thank you to Kayla for getting me plugged in with these awesome ladies a couple days before the show!
So, we start hearing random times the Idols are going to be pulling up, basically in the ballpark of 12:30 – 1:30 that afternoon. While we are waiting, we find out that David Cook was at Urban Outfitters at Santana Row! (Being from San Jose, I was stoked!)
SJ by the way, definitely home of the Dread heads and the Archie fans! NO JOKE! I was absolutely amazed by how many of them were out that early!
So, buses pulled in around 1:15. Fans are packed against the gate. 60-70 people pushing into one another in crazy 100+ degree weather…NO BUENO.
So, David and Archie come and wave, they were followed by the other eight, who also came out and acknowledged that we were out there, a few minutes later, there are Idols galore at the gate signing.
ABSOLUTE MAYHEM.
At one point out at the same time were DC, Carly, Castro and Brooke.
So, due to not being up against the gate, and being one of the first there, I am still puzzled at how that happened, but I had to pass my photos up for DC to sign. I had two, well three missions that day. My mission that afternoon was to have David sign my and Sarah’s pix that we took with him in Fresno that I had blown up into 8x10’s.
The pictures, plus a card that I had written out on my and Sarah’s behalf get in his hands and he’s like, “Am I signing these?” and I say, “Yes!” So, I watch him sign them, and they get passed back to me. I say, “Thank you David!” He looks up and waves at me! *GLEE* (And there’s proof of this on youtube! LOL.)
(At 1:42 he starts signing my and Sarah's pictures, listen to hear me say "Thank you!")
At one point David hugged the fence in effort to pass a hug on and we all went for him!
Carly saw this awesome sign that a fan had made for her, and the look on her face was priceless! She was over the moon about it!
Jason shot his Vlog during this time as well, and I’ve been told that at like two seconds in, you can see me!
When Archie came out…OMG…screams you could probably hear for miles. The most hilarious thing I saw was this HUGE cut out of ARCHIE’S HEAD! It had a letter for him on the back, but seriously, I wish I had gotten a picture of it, cause it was hysterical!
Jason was given a soccer ball by a fan, and started kicking it around as soon as he got it out of the bag.
Okay, so crazy heat + Kirsten = Kirsten not feeling so awesome.
So, I had to take a break from the Idol afternoon and go home to the A/C for a couple hours.
So, the show…
I swear that Michael Johns and Carly can do no wrong!
Carly sang “Bring Me to Life” a bit differently than she had in Fresno, it was super awesome!
Brooke was adorable with her little, “Do You Know Your Way to San Jose?” while moving from the piano to the mic.
Syesha!!! Her performance of “Listen” was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I had tears by the end of it, it that good! And she got a huge standing ovation, which was completely deserved! She got a bit emotional just taking it in.
Archie! He sounded fantastic! “Stand by Me” gets me every time, especially when he busts out with his sassy dancing – I love it.
Cook – “Hello”, IMO BEST OF THE TOUR! (And even last night at the Sac show, I am still positive that the SJ performance was BOMB!) It was emotional and passionate. Made me want to jump down from the lower level and rush the stage! :o)
Oh! And GUYLINER ALERT!!!
Just in the corner of his eyes…I’m still not sure how I feel about that.
I think it was after “Hello” or “TOML” that David was visibly overwhelmed by the crowd’s response, and he stood there taking the moment in.
When the guitar tech brought him out his guitar, there was an “SJ Sharkie” hanging from his guitar. And he was like “Apparently, Tim is a Sharks fan. Which, I guess this makes me a Sharks fan.”
David was talking about the shows and said something like, “Show number six and I’m so jaded!” LOL.
The performance of “My Hero” that night was AMAZING!
Billie Jean, I was trying to multi-task! I had Sarah on the phone, and I was trying to take pix…as soon as he was like thanks for coming out, I booked it out of the Arena back down to the bus area, where I found myself a railing with my name on it.
That night they started coming out around 11:20. Talked to Michael Johns about his performance. I cannot get over his accent, it’s KILLER!!! Michael also helped me accomplish another mission that day, cause I had him sign something for one of my friends who loved him on the show, so I was stoked!
There was a girl that was having the Idols sign her cast, and when David got to her, he seriously stopped and was like, “What did you do to your arm?” Too sweet.
David was coming down the line after Michael, and I asked him for a picture and he said, “I want to Darlin’, but I have to keep moving, maybe on the way back.”
Yeah, he called me “Darlin’”
*DEAD*
But, I had yet, my last mission to accomplish that day, which was to ask about the gift Sarah and I got him.
So, he was still by me, so I asked, “David, did you get a chance to check out the dvd my friend and I gave you last week?”
He looks right at me, smiles knowingly and said, “We watched it the night I got it.”
I asked what he thought about it, and he said, “It was hilarious!”
SCORE!!!
I am still jazzed about that quick convo with him!
When Brooke came by we all gave her complements on her set, and she said that we were the nicest fans on tour she had met and some fans in another city had asked her when better people were coming out one night after a show. How hateful is that? Brooke is awesome and so sweet!
I believe Syesha was next, and I told her that her last song had me in tears by the end of it. She looked up at me and was all, “Aww!” She’s a doll!
When Carly came by signing, she signed someone’s Ed hardy shoe, and she proceeded to tell us all about him. He’s an old school tattoo artist. Funny, and educational!
Talked to Castro about his blog, and let him know that it was way awesome.
The loudest screams came when Archuleta was brought out.
They all had to leave around midnight and one of the last things I see is Michael Johns running by with David Cook on his back! It was hilarious!
I honestly can’t believe how nice the Idols are.
I truly believe that each of the Idols in the Top 10, deserve all the success!
The San Jose show was truly such a treat, and I enjoyed every minute of it!
It was a great show and yay for meeting the Idols again!

Idols LIVE! at the Savemart Center at Fresno State!
Okay, so here's my long awaited, okay maybe not, but whatev.
Enjoy my Idol adventure from Fresno, CA!
There it is! My lengthy recap! And of course, I will have more recaps and pix coming up this week from the San Jose and Sacramento shows, as I will be attending those as well.
HOLLA!
I have more pix up at "Hooked on Cook!"
Peace out!
Enjoy my Idol adventure from Fresno, CA!
So, my day began by my train running late. So, I got to Merced to meet Sarah like an hour late, I was absolutely panicked that we were gonna miss the Idols if they came out.
So, we got to the Savemart Center at Fresno State a little before 1. Maybe 10-15 minutes later and after Sarah and I prepped DC’s gift (a Cosmo mag, Vanity Fair mag, a dvd documentary, and a card, that I had to figure out something poetic and meaningful to write him, and once I started writing, it just flowed out.), we also met another Sara(h?) from D-C.org, and pretty much realized that we were the only like straight up DC fans…the Archie fans were out that afternoon.
So, a bit after one, we look across the road and see the buses coming off of the freeway off-ramp. And the thing with the Savemart Center’s bus parking, its underground, where we can see, but it makes access to the Idols not as easy as other venues.
We got very strict orders from security to back away from the fences, which meant we couldn’t really see the Idols get off the bus, but we could see them go to the door into the center, and the first one I saw was David, no one noticed it was him, because of the fedora, and to me, the fedora is what gave him away, and I was all, “HI DAVID!” He turned up to see where the crowd was, and waved at us. It was pretty funny to see the Idols get confused as to where the crowd was, because they couldn’t see us until they were at the door.
So, the security guard…yeah just one, told us that they would not be coming out and then we see Brooke and Kristy Lee Cook come out pointing at the ramp, so we make our way over where the ramp was.
I was bummed that I didn’t really get to talk to Brooke, because she was resting her voice, but I watched her interact with fans, and she was still doing her best to interact and listen to everyone talking to her.
KLC…well, she seemed nice. I got an autograph from her, but she didn’t stay out very long. The crowd got pretty distracted when Carly walked up to us passing out brownies. How cute is that, right?
Carly was a doll! Me and Sarah both got pictures with her, and then she totally hung out with us talking about the show and taking her husband to Ireland with her for the first time. She seriously spent like 15 minutes hanging out with us answering questions.
Sarah and I did pull her aside to ask if she knew if David was going to be coming out, because we had brought him a gift. She was like well, we did press yesterday, so it’s the boy’s turn today, I was thinking, “OH NO!” And then Carly says that she would take it to him, because she didn’t think he was coming out, and she totally looked in the bag as we told her what we got him, and we got into his vocabulary a bit, it was nice. So, we were stoked that the gift was going to get to David for sure. Carly wrote “Cook” on the bag, and finished talking to the crowd, then as she was walking away, I told her thank you for taking that to him and she turned around and was like, “You’re welcome!”
SWEETHEART!
Oh yeah, while Carly was talking to us she kept saying that she thought her feet were getting bit, and we were like, “Welcome to Fresno”. For real. Bugs like whoa.
So, Brooke is still out, we go get pix with her, and I see Carly walking back towards me with the bag, and she hands it to me and tells me, “He’s coming.” And I was like, “THANK YOU!”
I look up and there’s David Cook and Michael Johns! Cookies and Milk! HOLLA!
And I think it was right then that I was like…OMG, I’m going to meet David Cook, OMG. Yeah, I had to like take a moment to take it in, because as much as I really, REALLY wanted to meet DC, I was trying not to get my hopes too high in anticipation leading up to the show, and then he just walks up to the crowd, it was SURREAL. So, Sarah and I swapped cameras, so when we were taking pix with the Idols we had each others’ cameras. We took lots of pix of him before we actually got a chance to say hi to him, I was struggling, because my hand was shaking like WHOA. Did not think I would get that nervous, but I did!
I decided to have him sign the picture in Rolling Stone. Sarah had him sign his pic in the People’s hottest bachelor’s issue, and he hesitates, and Sarah’s like please? And I go, “Dude, it’s a hot picture.” And he told us that his friends had been giving him slack over it.
Also, I watched him sign a couple Axium cd covers, and he said something about the drummer taking advantage of the fans a bit, as far as charging ridiculous prices on the Axium cds on Ebay and such. I was actually happy to have David’s take on that situation.
So, Sara(h?) from D-C.org was awesome enough to take a picture of both Sarah and I with David. (YOU ROCK GIRLIE!) And she was in the process of switching cameras, cause she was taking one with mine and one with Sarah’s and I was all, “Take your time!”
I mean, David Cook has his arm around me, when is this going to happen again? Take you time!
After those pictures were taken, I handed David his gift and told him that we had picked him up a couple things to have during the tour, and he was so sweet and was all, “Bless you guys!” He looks in the bag and goes, “I see Angelina Jolie!” It was awesome!
So, he takes his bag, we thank him for the pictures, and we walk over to Michael Johns, cause HELLO! Michael Johns! His accent is awesome! He was a doll too!
We got more shots of David then DC and MJ peaced out.
Sarah and I were officially “GLEEING” from ear-to-ear! We get to Sarah’s car, to basically get the fan girl moments out of our system. We then see the crowd forming again, and we see that it’s Archie and Ramiele! So, we go back over there, and let me tell you David Cook hit it on the nose when he said that Archie is HILARIOUS! He totally is. Like the crowd was just going nuts and you could see him just get overwhelmed and just looked up and smiled, it was so cute.
And his eyes…they sparkle. I’m not kidding. That kid has amazing eyes. Absolutely gorgeous. So, I gave him the Top 12 TV Guide that I was had the other 9 Idols sign, and he was like this is a weird photo, and he explains that the coloring made them all look weird, but he had those moments with the fans that were like awkward, but really funny. It was nice to see him looking relaxed. He’s another doll.
We did go over and say hi to Ramiele, she was also very sweet to us.
Oh, at some point Syesha appeared out of nowhere. She was also resting her voice, but was interacting with fans, she was very nice.
So, after we met Ramiele, the security guard who also told us the Idols weren’t coming out at all, says that he’s been told that no one else is coming out.
So, again Sarah and I go back to her car to get something to drink, cause it’s hot out. LIKE WHOA.
We literally have taken one drink, and we see Jason Castro and Chikezie! So, I leave my drink on the roof of Sarah’s car, and we go back over to meet the guys.
BTW…Carly pronounced Chikezie’s name for us, it sounded super awesome with her accent.
So, Jason is so friendly and relaxed, and I handed him my mag, and he was all, “Let me see what I can do for you.”
I asked him about his Vlog and if we’re going to more, because I like them, and thought they were funny, and he said that there would be more, but they are still awkward for him.
Okay, so Chikezie…FLIRT ALERT.
He was like, “Hey”. His voice is very soft…just sayin’. He totally put his arm around both me and Sarah when we got pix with him, it was pretty hilarious. All up in the Kool-Aid. LMAO. He was super sweet.
Basically, anytime after we had met Cookie, we could have been hit by a car and totally not have minded AT ALL.
Sarah and I then took off to get lunch and we should have just gotten like diet sodas and split a sandwich, cause we could barely eat due to the events of the afternoon. Luckily, a couple Midori Sours during Happy Hour calmed us down a wee bit, kind of, sort of, not really. LOL.
BTW. We totally had a hot waiter. Beside the point, just sayin’.
One of my friends from college joined us (I’m Fresno State Alumni…so this would make something during the concert extra special for me…)
We went on campus to visit with one of my BFFs for like an hour before heading back over to the venue to get in.
Once we were in, got programs…then heard the music playing…”Break Anotha” by the one and only BLAKE LEWIS! Idol was representing!
Also, before the show they did a video segment on Blake, totally reppin’ “ADD”. That’s some rockin’ promo!
Okay, so the show starts…
Chikezie – Great energy, was in good voice, fun to watch do his thing!
Ramiele – More impressed with her than I thought I would be. She rocked out on the M5 song she sang. It was really good!
Michael Johns – Nothing, but awesomeness! I loved that we got a little taste of “Light My Fire”, however “It’s All Wrong, But It’s Alright”…very nice performance.
KLC – You know, I have nothing, but nice things to say about her performances, I was actually pretty moved by her performance of “God Bless the USA”. She sounded really spot on.
Carly – AMAZING! Simply, amazing. I really wish she and MJ had longer sets, because I didn’t want their sets to be over!
Brooke – I was pretty overwhelmed by her performance of “Let It Be”. I mean, when she sang it on the show, I damn cried, so I was happy that I kept it together. I love that she sang Feist, and for someone who cannot stand Coldplay, I loved Brooke’s version of “Yellow”.
Intermission…I enjoy me some DC Guitar Hero commercials. HOLLA.
Castro – Sounded great, I love his southern drawl. I loved “Daydream Believer”.
Syesha – HOMEGIRL CAN SANG. She was AMAZING! “Listen” blew me away. She totally should have sung that on the show instead of “I Believe”. IMO.
Archie – I knew that the screams would be insane, and they were. I mean ear-piercing screams. He came out from the bottom of the stage, with the dry ice aflowin’…I love the special effects. His performances of “Apologize” and “Stand by Me”…LOVED THEM. He got overwhelmed by the crowd, which was pretty dang charming.
DAVID!!!! – Okay, so if Archie’s screams were insane, then David’s screams from the crowd were CRAZY INSANE! It was so loud!! And as soon as I saw that Fresno State Bulldogs baseball jersey on him, both Sarah and I were like THAT’S AWESOME! Way to represent!
His whole set, IMO, absolutely perfect…I wish he could have had a 6th song, “Always Be My Baby” anyone? But, it was awesome. His interaction with the crowd was great. He took time to film us cheering him on.
Every song, every note, the rockin’ out during “My Hero”, the multiple glory notes in “Billie Jean” just made the absolute perfect, surreal day, just that much more amazing!
The closing group number…if I had to pick a song for them to sing, Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop the Music” was the one I would want! I loved it when they did it on IGB, so I was stoked!
Okay…so one word to describe after the show…MAYHEM.
It was chaotic, I wouldn’t be surprised if they stopped coming out after shows. I got a couple more things signed by both Davids, MJ, Brooke and Sy. Sarah and I stayed until DC peaced out.
What I witnessed…Jason getting accosted by fans…MJ giving out hugs…and kisses! (On the cheek!) I was like…WOW. They’re like rockstars. WHOA.
It was insane.
So yeah…best day EVER!!!
There it is! My lengthy recap! And of course, I will have more recaps and pix coming up this week from the San Jose and Sacramento shows, as I will be attending those as well.
HOLLA!
I have more pix up at "Hooked on Cook!"
Peace out!
